The Woodsman's Dawn - Unreal Engine 5

I’m excited to share my latest environment piece. This is a massive milestone for me, it is my very first proper project in Unreal Engine.

Just two months ago, I barely knew my way around the engine and had never even created a material. That changed when I saw a video by Andrew Averkin. The cinematic quality of his work completely blew me away and inspired me to lock in and dedicate the last two months to learning environment art from scratch.

When it came to building the environment, learning how to create complex surfaces was a major milestone. I dove deep into layered materials using tutorials from both Hugh Chew and Daniel Cormino , which completely unlocked my workflow and helped me achieve the exact gritty, weathered look I wanted for the abandoned house.

Since I was already familiar with procedural tools, jumping into Unreal's PCG framework felt natural. By combining a bit of official documentation with community tutorials, I managed to get a strong handle on procedural workflows quickly. From there, Dallas Drapeau’s guides were incredibly helpful for learning how to optimize the heavy foliage so the scene could run smoothly.

For the forest itself consists of a mix of assets from the Megaplants and Megascans collections. I blended these high quality library assets together with a few custom, quick models I built myself to give the scene a unique, personal touch.

I hope you enjoy exploring this scene as much as I enjoyed creating it. Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out, and wishing everyone the best of luck with your own creative projects ahead!
